Healthy Skin From Within

Healthy Skin From Within

healthy skin from within

Youthful and radiant skin isn't simply a matter of your momma's genes. Your daily habits from the foods you eat to the products you use play a major role in what you see in the mirror.

Here are my favorite holistic approaches to glow from the inside out.

1. clean up your diet

There is a direct correlation between the foods we ingest and the way our skin looks and feels. If you don’t believe me, try eliminating all processed/packaged food for a week and add in loads of fresh, colorful fruits and vegetables. You will see how food can drastically change the appearance of your skin from the inside out.

Eat fresh foods high in Vitamin C. Make sure you include lots of fresh fruits and vegetables rich in Vitamin C in your diet. Vitamin C boosts collagen synthesis for healthier, tighter skin. If we eat more foods that are alive, bright in color, packed with hydration, full of enzymes and vitamins and minerals, it will better our chance for radiant, clear skin. Try adding a serving (or two!) of the following foods to your diet every day:

  • Red bell pepper
  • Kiwi fruit
  • Tomatos
  • Strawberries
  • Oranges
  • Papaya
  • Broccoli
  • Kale

Drink more water. Skin is our largest organ, playing a vital role in removing toxins from the body, and is made up of 64% water. Drinking the prescribed 8-10 glasses of H20 a day will increase blood flow to your skin, making it look more radiant. Lukewarm water with lemon and honey helps detoxify your system while keeping your skin clean and healthy.

Say goodbye to sugar. Sugar weakens the immune system making it harder for your body to fight off bacteria that leads to acne and other inflammatory skin conditions. Sugar also works to damage collagen, the most abundant protein in the body. Collagen is springy and resilient, however when high amounts of sugar are consumed collagen becomes dry and brittle. This leads to wrinkles, sagging, and dullness of the skin. The good news is that these effects can be reversed. Eliminating sugar sweetened beverages (and foods!) from your diet will result in brighter and tighter skin.

2. BOOST YOUR NUTRIENT QUOTA

When I set out to find quality supplements for my health, I was looking for ingredients that were pure, and synergistically worked together. Three of my favorite skin-savvy nutrients are b-vitamins, fish oils, and polyphenol antioxidants.

B-vitamins enhance skin health by counteracting damage caused by free-radicals – molecules that break down healthy cells and contribute to ageing and disease. If you are suffering from chronic skin issues, or even just sick of dealing with a dull and unhealthy complexion, the cause may be a Vitamin B deficiency. It's important to take your B-vitamins as a complex, rather than isolated versions. Since they all work together as partners it allows them to break down and metabolize properly.

Omega fatty acids help the skin to retain moisture – leading to softer, smoother skin with less dryness and flakiness, and a reduction of fine lines. Since I don't eat nearly enough fresh fatty fish, I take 1,000mg of pure, ultra-concentrated DHA/EPA omega-3 fatty acids (sustainably sourced from wild fish from pure Alaskan waters).

Antioxidant-rich polyphenols prevent oxidative stress: by destroying free radicals caused by pollution, UV rays, poor diets and smoking, they slow down skin ageing and the appearance of wrinkles. Whatever our age, their antioxidants protect our skin cells against oxidative damage and slow down the ageing process.

These ingredients alone can do wonders to improve the health of the body and the health of the skin.

If you want to heal your skin from the inside out and get all of the wondrous nutrients, check out my favorite Life Strip Supplement. Taking these supps daily has dramatically transformed my skin (hair and nails, too!).

3. Yoga, breathing + sleep

Do more yoga. Yoga works to improve digestion and circulation. When your body has better blood flow, it naturally produces glowing skin. Yoga helps increase blood circulation and encourage stronger functioning of the detoxification organs in our body.

Breathe! Most of us go in and out of our days with shallow breathing in to our chest and shoulders. Deep belly breathing changes the pH of your gut and allows for better absorption of the nutrients you eat. Try practicing taking three deep breath into your belly before eating a meal. It will dramatically change your gut health, digestion, and as a result -- your skin!

Get your beauty rest. When your body is deeply rested, it automatically shows on the face. Your body boosts blood flow to the skin while you snooze, which means you wake to a healthy glow. Skin makes new collagen when you sleep, which prevents sagging. Only getting 5 hours a night can lead to twice as many fine lines as sleeping 7 would. A minimum of eight hours of sound sleep is ideal.

4. Go au-naturale

Apply natural stuff on your skin. Your skin is one of your largest organs. It 'digests' everything you put on it. In fact, 60% of what contacts your skin is absorbed straight into your bloodstream in just 26 seconds. Women, on average, use twelve products containing 168 different ingredients daily. That's why I recommend using products that are natural, pure and safe.

Reach for products free from toxic ingredients. I personally prefer the Youth line by Shaklee. These products are chemical-free, made only from pure botanicals, and leaves my skin fresh, rejuvenated and glowing. You can read more about my test-run with this line here.
