It took me hitting rock bottom to have that “ah-ha” moment that changed the trajectory of my life. It was that life-altering moment that shifted the way I fuel my body, move my body, and treat my body; it transformed my overall health paradigm.

It was this struggle that compelled me to started Nutrition Simplified in 2010; to provide a resource for people searching for answers and looking for truth, not hype.

Because that was me.

And Nutrition Simplified was the resource I wish I had.

Let me back up and start from the beginning...

One of the things I’m often asked is, "What inspired you to start Nutrition Simplified?"

I suppose this seed was planted in me at a young age (pun intended). I grew up on my family's farm in a small town in Maine.

I was fortunate to harvest - and eat - fresh foods straight from the garden every day, which taught me to have a great appreciation of where food comes from and the hard work that goes into growing it.

It wasn’t until my teens that I came face-to-face with my own health crisis (landing me in a hospital bed for six weeks). I had two options: take medication for the rest of my life, or learn alternative ways to regain control of my health naturally.

Innately, I chose the 'farmacy' over the pharmacy, and six years later I had three college degrees in nutrition.

Here’s what I learned…

Today, more than 90% of all chronic disease in the U.S. is caused by food choice, toxic ingredients, and nutritional deficiencies. In fact, the U.S. leads the world in degenerative diseases. And the very word DEGENERATIVE indicates nutritional deficiency.

You might be asking, "how can that be?"

Plain and simple: we are an overfed and undernourished society. In fact, 9 out of 10 Americans fall short on essential nutrients in their daily diet.

It's because of this nutrient gap (and chemical crisis) that we are now experiencing illnesses that did not even exist 50 or 100 years ago.

Think there may be a possible correlation? Bingo!

The prevalence of chronic disease in Americans could be related to the radical change in our diet in the last 100 years from whole real unprocessed food to our current toxic fake-food diet.

We have lost touch with the most crucial element to our well-being— nature.

Our industrialized world has branched away from the simplicities and values of small-scale farming in which our communities thrived upon just 50 years ago. 

Perhaps we should stop asking why real food is so expensive and start asking why processed food is so cheap.

The simplicity of REAL food is now overshadowed by the complexities of the fake-food imposters.

Should we really be eating 5 pounds of food additives a year?

Or 152 pounds of sugar a year per person? This is an addictive substance we never ate nearly this much of just 200 years ago.

Should we consume 10 percent of our calories from refined GMO soybean oil—something that didn’t even exist 150 years ago?

You don’t need an advanced science degree to understand that our bodies did not evolve on this stuff.

Okay, so maybe you decided long ago that this stuff was bad news. Maybe you want to live a healthier life but feel the overwhelm of options in the health-conscious arena.

Do you go paleo? Ketogenic? Plant-based?... Do you count macros, points, or calories?

The truth is, in order to be healthy we don't have to waste hours analyzing nutrition labels, confine ourselves to the latest fad-diet, pull our hair out over media headlines, or be obsessed with counting our food’s calories.

Actually, the more we scrutinize our food, the further away from health we get. Because the healthiest foods don’t come with any labels at all.

The healthiest foods don't have fancy packaging with shiny labels that say "gluten-free" and "low in sugar". We can't cut coupons for them, and we won't see them in advertising campaigns. In fact, it's only when we eat the freshest ingredients with no labels at all that the complexity and technicalities of modern-day "healthy" eating become completely irrelevant.

Remember that age-old saying, 'all calories are equal - it's all about moderation'?

Turns out that's nonsense.

An avocado and a snickers bar are NOT interchangeable.

The QUALITY of our food matters more the QUANTITY of the food we eat. (Sorry, Weight Watcher's.)

Because no matter what you weigh, you are, quite literally, what you eat.

Every 35 days your skin replaces itself... Your liver, every 6 months... Your bones, every 10 years. Your body makes new cells from the foods you eat. What you eat literally becomes you. And you have the privilege to choose what you're made of.

I started embracing the fact that by simply providing my body with the real food and nutrients it craves, I no longer had to headache over counting points, calories, or grams of [insert - you name it].

Not only that, but my life as I knew it expanded. What I mean is, not only did I feel freedom from the confines of 'food rules', I felt freedom from being a victim of feeling like crap in my own body.

It took me a while to understand that my symptoms weren’t the problem. They were just messages from my body attempting to get my attention so I could address the root cause of the problem.

It was only when I learned to address the ROOT CAUSE of my symptoms that I was able to restore my health.

And once I gained the tools and knowledge to connect the dots for myself, I became empowered to be the ‘manager’ of my body.

You see, my foodie philosophy is simple — It's not about eating less; it’s about nourishing more. If nature made it, eat it. If man made it, leave it.

Our bodies are self-healing. All our bodies’ need is the right fuel to support it in what it's designed to do best — keep us healthy.

The good news is you can regain your power right now, in this very moment. The power is in YOUR hands.

But it doesn't end there, my friend. That's just where it begins

Because healthy eating won't turn into healthy living if it feels like a chore.

All too often, I see women haunted by toxic thoughts, compounded by the self-imposed pressures that they contend with, every day. The intentional focus required for lifestyle change, paired with the expectation of results can feel heavy when we're hard on ourselves; be it to do it 'perfectly', let go of what no longer serves you, or lose those last 15 pounds.

But I'm here to abolish that thinking. Because it's not about the weight you lose, it's about the LIFE you gain.
